Biography

Picture of Colette Call

Colette Call began her musical studies at an early age learning flute, violin, and piano.  By the time she entered high school, the piano had become her primary instrument, and she began earning awards in local and national competitions, including the Kawai Piano Competition, the Utah State Fair, the Arlette Day Competition and the Nina Wideman competition.  Miss Call also composed her first work, a short concerto, and won honorable mention in the Utah Symphony 5000th composition competition.  At the age of 18, Colette received national recognition as one of 16 U. S. recipients of the National Kochanski Award for Superior Musicianship.

Colette received her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Utah and followed it with a Master of Music degree in 1997, graduating Summa cum Laude.  During her stay at the U. of U.,  she was awarded five different scholarships including a Presidential Scholarship, Howard Hughes Scholarship, Jacob A. Kahn Scholarship, and the Gerald A. Tracy Memorial Scholarship.  During her senior year, Colette was named as the 1993-1994 University of Utah Presser Scholar.

Miss Call has performed and toured throughout Europe, Israel, and the United States.  She has been featured as a soloist with the Utah Philharmonic Symphony, BYU Chamber Orchestra, Rick's College Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Utah Symphony Orchestra.  She appeared four times as a featured soloist with the Saltaire's Show Chorus and worked for two years as pianist for the highly acclaimed Millennium Choir conducted by Lex and Peggy de Azevedo.  Former piano teachers include Dr. Bonnie Gritton, Robert Smith, Norene Emerson, and Marolyn Frogley.

Beginning in 1997, Colette took the position of Director of Music for the Youth Enrichment Foundation (YEF), an organization established to bring music and art to children who are economically disadvantaged.  Thanks to the generosity of the YEF sponsors, Warner Truck Center, Colette and the YEF music staff teach piano lessons and general music to over 300 children each year in three public schools.  In addition to this full time job, Colette maintains a private studio, works as a composer and arranger, and regularly gives live performances at local venues.

In 2002, Colette released the CD Power in His Touch, which includes highlights from an original musical featuring more than thirty vocal and orchestral songs.  One of the songs, "Good Tidings" was nominated for the Best Holiday Recording, and received the 2002 Pearl Award in that category.  Encouraged by the favorable reception of the music, Colette turned her attention to the development of the full stage musical.  An introductory version of the story was presented in Laie, Hawaii as part of BYU-Hawaii’s Christmas Lighting Ceremony in 2003, followed by the staged reading of the full production in Salt Lake City in July 2004.  The fully produced musical Power in His Touch premiered in 2005 to sold out audiences at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City where it starred David Osmond, Utah performing artists Daniel Beck and Katrina Nelson, and a cast of 40 other local performers.  Reviewers were glowing in their reviews of the show.

Much of the 2005 cast, including Osmond, Beck and Nelson, returned for the 2006 production of Power in His Touch at the Wagner center and the musical was performed again in 2008 at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City where it was directed by renowned Utah tenor George Dyer. That production starred Beck, Jessie Clark Funk and Casey Elliott of Ogden.

Colette has also professionally released two solo piano CD's, Repose and Simple Pleasures. Her songs can be regularly heard on various local radio stations.
